The WHISKEY class patrol submarine's were a class of ocean-going diesel-electric boats designed from 1946 by the Lazurit Design Bureau in Gorky. The class started as a development of the pre-war 'S' class boat, but was, like most post war boats, heavily influenced by the Kreigsmarine's type XXI boats. Early WHISKEY's featured a sail much like the Type XXI's, with turreted ZU-25 AA guns. Besides serving with the Soviet navy, P-613's were exported to Albania, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Indonesia and Poland. 21 boats were subsequently produced in China as the Type 03 SS. Whiskey's were also modified to take one or two SS-N-3 SHADDOCK cruise missiles to sea as WHISKEY SINGLE CYLINDER and P-644 WHISKEY TWIN CYLINDER boats. A more dramatic modification was the WHISKEY LONG BIN, carrying 4 SHADDOCK's, though these were not successful due to stability issues and poor handling. All the SHADDOCK Whiskey's were very loud, suffering flow noise from the missile mounts. The LONG BINS were subsequently converted to P-640 radar picket boats. At least two were lost at sea, one from flooding from a faulty schnorkel valve, and one after a collision with a soviet cargo ship. Whiskey's featured a notoriously faulty navigation system that would direct the boats safely through shallow shoal and rock filled waters, only to dump the track well inside the territorial limit. A number of incursions into Norwegian and Swedish territorial waters resulted, frequently drawing heavy depth charge fire. A major stink was the October 1981 'Whiskey on the rocks' grounding of S-363/U-137 right outside Karlskrona naval base. A tense stand-off ensued as the Soviets sent a task group into the Swedes EEZ, only turning away after a coastal artillery battery locked up the Soviet ships and shifted the fire control radar into frequency hopping high PRF mode. Gamma detectors also confirmed the presence of nuclear-tipped torpedo's aboard the grounded Whiskey, further compounding that stunning modulus of flustercuck. Updated again, ground bow shape, snort mast installed, texture mapped with custom textures, for an external simulation platform. #cold_war #navy #ship #soviet #SSK #Submarine #warship #Whiskey
