The flag of Vietnam was adopted on September 5, 1945. It is a red flag with a large yellow five-pointed star in the center, symbolizing the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Red represents success and revolution. The five points of the star represent the workers, the peasants, the soldiers, the intellectuals and the young. Initially the flag of North Vietnam, it became the flag of the entire nation after the conquest of South Vietnam. In Vietnamese it is commonly called Cờđỏ sao vàng ("Red flag with a golden star").
