The name “ninebark” derives from the peeling mature bark, which makes it look like there are multiple layers of bark on the plant. It is a very appealing winter effect. Ninebark is a rugged native plant that is very useful for cold, exposed landscapes. Summer Wine® combines the dramatic color of Diabolo® with the fine texture and compact branching of ‘Nana’. The compact habit makes it a good choice for residential landscapes. It has superior disease-resistance, including resistance to powdery mildew. It adds durable season-long color to landscapes, and can also be used as a cut flower. Physocarpus will tolerate clay soils, and extablished plants will also tolerate some drought.
