The IBM 1311 Disk Storage Unit was a multi-model disk drive system introduced in 1962, designed for IBM medium size business and scientific computers, including the IBM 1401 / 1440 / 1620 Data Processing Systems, and the 1710 Process Control System. The size of a top-loading washing machine, the 1311 replaced previous larger fixed disk systems (IBM 1301/1302) containing up to 50 24-inch spindle-mounted hard disks with a new removable and portable IBM 1316 Disk Pack containing six spindle mounted 14” magnetic disks, measuring 4 inches high and weighing 9.4 lbs., that stored two megabytes of data, allowing unlimited disk storage. Seven 1311 models were introduced in the 1960s, including a “SLAVE” drive, each keyed to particular computer systems, but all were eventually replaced by newer models and the line was phased out during the early 1970s This model represents a Model 3 “MASTER” drive keyed to the IBM 1620 and 1710 systems..
