The Horizontal Retort is the oldest building on the Launceston Gasworks site. Built in 1860 on a swampy paddock, the Horizontal Retort produced coal gas using Newcastle coal from NSW. The building has undergone minor restoration to prevent it erroding away but remains largely derelict at present times.
