This is the St Joseph Islander, a diesel double-ended car ferry that transported vehicles to and from St Joseph Island. The Islander was stationed at the ferry docks located at Bamford Island and Twyning Island and operated between 1952 and 1973. Upon completion of the Bernt Gilbertson St Joseph Island bridge in 1973, she was decommissioned and laid up for a year to undergo refit. She was lengthened to 127' from her original length of 92' and towed via tugboat to Glenora, Ontario where she presently serves as the MV Glenora.
The St Joseph Islander was operated by the government of Ontario around the clock, year round. This model is a component within my larger model of the entire area which features the Bernt Gilbertson St Joseph Island bridge, ferry docks and of course the ferry itself.
