an old device used to scare deer away from the crops. Water pours into the culm section via a spout. As the weight of the water overcomes the weight of the bamboo on the other side of the fulcrum, the bamboo rotates downward- releasing the accumulated water. The sudden loss of water weight allows the bamboo to return to its original position- and it does so with a thump, as the bamboo comes to rest upon the rock again.
