Iron is a small household appliance that is used to remove creases in the fabric that often result from washing (by washing machine or by hand) and by drying. Although the name derives from the material with which these appliances were originally built, iron, the plates of modern irons are mainly made of aluminum and in some cases are subjected to a special treatment to make them non-stick, thus facilitating the sliding on the tissues .
Ironing works by loosening the bonds between the polymer chains inside the textile fibers of the material. As the molecules are heated, the fibers are subjected to the pressure of the plate, which keeps them in place while they cool down. Some materials, such as cotton, require the addition of water to further loosen intermolecular bonds. There are many modern fabrics that are produced with special care to eliminate or diminish the need for ironing after washing.
