Plantation Shutters

Plantation Shutters

Jim S.
This example of Plantation Shutters is designed with 3.5 inch louvers mounted on 3 inch centers. That is the standard for this sized louvers. The louvers are controlled by a hidden control arm on the back. Each set of shutters is 53 1/8" high to fit tightly in my 54 and a smidge window opening (with casing). I designed these shutters by starting with Rockler.com's Shutter Design Wizard using my master bedroom window dimensions. Then I started building in SketchUp getting the tolerances closer to what I wanted. Rockler recommends adding a center rail for shutters taller than 48", so I did. If you want, you can delete the wall in this model to just keep the set of shutters. I just wanted to show you, that you can edit this component into sub-components in order to tailor the dimensions to your needs. My Florida house is concrete block construction, and the windows currently do not have any framing, so I designed a low profile casing would provide the anchor points I need for the shutters that are not attached to the walls.. Note that all the rails are rabbetted to cut out as much light as possible. The center stiles are rabbetted as well.
