I used a ½" plywood sheet to make the shelf and a ¼" plywood sheet for the back panel. The back panel is not necessary you can just leave it against the wall and the cube storages will work just fine. The shelf is plenty sturdy by it self. For the shelf joinery i used pocket holes. You will have to be carefull since this is ½" material, pocket holes easily punch through if ur not precise.
