The spiral staircase is a type of staircase whose circular path continues with a helical course.
Often, the path winds around a vertical center axis (plank); At other times, there is no longer the column for which the staircase is limited to turning around the so-called eye.
The spiral staircases were conceived and built in the past to access towers and minarets. This was because of their peculiarity, that of occupying little space on the ramps, so much so that they could also be used inside monumental columns or pillars. Thanks to this feature, they are still used.
A spiral staircase can be obtained by superimposing two ramps, for example by reserving one at the ascent and the other at the descent. This is, for example, the case of the famous helix scale of Chambord Castle (the introduction of this double structure is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci).
The spiral staircases can also follow a square planar pattern.
