Want to know the correct way to build a Railroad Tie retaining wall? Well here it is. Drawing from my past experience in construction, I designed this wall based on how I helped to build them while an employee, many years ago, for a local company here in Tennessee. The recommended backfill is always rock or stone. I've seen construction companies backfill with mud and get away with it, however it is not recommended beyond a certain height because mud can squeeze through the ties if enough pressure is put on the area above and near the tie wall, like a Cat D8 being driven on it, and can lead to wall failure, like ties popping out.
Oh, and one other thing, I did not draw the nail locations on this one. I may do one later with that.
