This was the unofficial name given to a giant reflecting telescope, six feet (180 cm) in diameter, which remained the largest telescope in the world from its construction in 1845 until 1917. It was built by William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse, on his estate at Birr Castle in central Ireland.
