Detroit Police Officer Alex J. Murphy is savagely murdered while trying to arrest the vicious gang led by Clarence J. Boddicker. Murphy is pronounced dead in the hospital, and what's left of his body is rebuilt by Omni Consumer Products as the prototype for a Cyborg Police Officer Program developed by OCP Security Concepts, Law Enforcement Division, as a contingency plan for the failure of the Enforcer Droid 209 project. Equipped with the hardware and firepower of a robot and the "instincts" of a policeman, when RoboCop goes online, he spectacularly stops crimes throughout Detroit, using extreme methods bordering on police brutality. His function is built on "prime directives" written into his core programming:
