Constructed in the Spanish Mission style, designed by the first dean of the school of architecture at the University of Oregon in 1925. Originally a chapel and mortuary, this building now houses private offices in the south-east wings but is mainly comprised of a two theater Indie cinema-art house. One theater is located in the renovated garage of the hearses, while the other main theater is in the main chapel, still adorned with ornate stained glass. A reminder of the Bijou's past can be found in the public bathrooms, ceilings leading down the hall to the restrooms are only about six feet tall as mortuary workers were always bent over while pushing bodies in gurneys. The Bijou was home to "Boo," the very fat, 22 year old cat, known as "the queen of the Bijou" who for more than a decade had held court from a theater seat in the Bijou's lobby or lolled in the theater's open central courtyard next to a catnip bush. As of 2009 Boo finally passed on and her favorite lobby seat has now become an impromtu shrine. #Bijou #cinema #Eugene #OR #Oregon #theater #theatre
