Built in 1907, the stadium is the home of Hopkins football, lacrosse, field hockey, track and field, and soccer teams. The original grandstands were added in 1908 and 1910. In 1965, the center section with the press box connected the two seating sections and in 1967 the concrete grandstand on the home side of the field was dedicated to Conrad Gebelein, director of the Johns Hopkins Band from 1931-74. In 1998, the Schelle Pavilion, a new structure on the visitors' side of Homewood Field, with a new main entrance and permanent seating for 5,000, was dedicated in honor of donors Wayne Schelle (Class of 1958), and Elaine Schelle (JHU Nursing Class of 1959). The track is named in honor of Donald S. Tobin (class of 1961).
In May 2003, a new tradition was started at the university. Commencement was held on Homewood Field. The new commencement site was chosen to offer a larger, more festive and dramatic setting. And it did... and does!
