The GP40 is a 4-axle diesel electric locomotive that was built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1965 to 1971. In 1972, the GP40 was replaced with the GP40-2.
Guilford Transportation Industries, or Guilford Rail System purchased a number of GP40s from Conrail in the mid to late 1980s in an attempt to standardize their fleet and replace the aging Alco and GE power inherited from the Boston & Maine (B&M) and Maine Central (MEC). MEC 310 was originally delivered to the Penn Central railroad, numbered 3194.
While Guilford amassed a total of around 70 GP40s, but most have been retired and given the torch. After Guilford's rebranding into Pan Am Railways, a number of GP40s have been given various versions of the Pan Am navy blue paint, known by rail fans as PAR 2. Only 16 remained on the roster before CSX Transportation purchased Pan Am Railways. MEC 310 served on the Berkshire & Eastern for a while, before being sent back to CSX for scrapping at the end of 2024.
